If you’re working in construction, landscaping, or anything in between, one of the tools that you might have a use for is a laser level. In fact, when it comes to building structures or leveling the ground, one of the most important tools out there is indeed the laser level.

Yes, this means that you need to buy one. But that said, there are types that use a green and a red laser. So, which one is right for you? Let’s figure out what the differences between them are and which is better for you.

Green vs. Red Lasers: The Science

Before we get into talking about the differences between these two types of laser levels, let’s take a closer look at what each of them is, and more specifically, what lasers are in general. First off, in its most basic form, a laser is a special device that stimulates molecules or atoms to emit light at specific wavelengths and then amplifies that light, generally to produce a narrow beam of light or radiation. In the case of red and green lasers, this is done using red and green laser diodes.

Now, exactly what kind of light or radiation is produced is going to depend on the diodes contained inside. As you can tell, what we are here to talk about today are red and green lasers. Keep in mind that the spectrum of visible light, or in other words, light that our eyes can see, has a wavelength range from about 400 to 700 nanometers, or nm for short.

What is important to note is that red light has the longest light wavelength between 625 and 740 nm, with violet light (380 to 435 nm) being at the other end of the visible light spectrum, and green light being right in the middle of the visible color spectrum at about 523 nm.

The other important thing to note here is that because green sits right in the middle of the visible light spectrum, it is the easiest for our human eyes to see, and it is also the easiest to see over long distances. Now, what most of the differences here come down to has to do with the diodes that produce the green or red laser beams.

Green vs. Red Laser Levels: Practical Differences

Alright, so now that we know what lasers are, let’s take a look at the differences between red and green lasers, specifically when it comes to red and green laser levels. There are four main differences that need to be considered here. These differences include battery life, range of visibility, brightness, and price.

1. Brightness

One of the main differences between these two types of laser levels has to do with how bright they are. The simple fact of the matter is that green laser diodes are often much higher in quality than red laser diodes.

Moreover, without getting too much into the science of it, green lasers, due to the special way in which they are built, are much brighter than red lasers. In fact, depending on the specific model of laser or laser level you get, a green laser beam can be anywhere from ten to fifty times brighter than a red laser beam.

Of course, this means that if you are working in bright conditions, such as a very well-lit room or outdoors, a green laser is going to be much easier to see than a red laser level.

2. Visibility Range

Another major difference to consider here is over how far of a distance the laser beams are visible. Now, this does of course have to do with the brightness of the laser diodes. Simply put, the brighter the laser beam is, the farther you will be able to see it.

When it comes down to it, depending on the quality of the laser level in question, you can expect a red laser level to reach anywhere from 25 to 50 feet. On the other hand, when it comes to green laser levels, you can expect them to reach anywhere from 40 to 80 feet.

Once again, exactly how far they reach does depend on the quality and the model of the laser level in question, but the bottom line is that red lasers cannot reach nearly the same distances as green laser levels.

3. Battery Life

OK, so we have established that green laser levels are more powerful, brighter, and farther reaching. But that said, this does of course come at a cost. Simply put, the brighter that beam is, the more battery the laser level in question is going to require to power that beam.

Seeing as green lasers are so much more powerful than red lasers, it is fair to assume that a green laser level is going to use much more battery than a red laser level.

Of course, when it comes to functionality for most people this is not going to be a deal-breaker. After all, if you need a laser level that can see far distances and is easily visible, and you have to sacrifice some battery for it, you will really have no choice but to do so.

4. Cost

The other major difference that you need to consider here is that a green laser level can cost anywhere from two to four times more than a red laser level. Of course, the exact price is going to depend on various features and factors, as well as the brand and model.

That said, you can expect to spend a whole lot more on a green laser level than on a red one.

Just so we’re clear, something we do want to stress here is that the accuracy of red laser levels and green laser levels is the same. Although green lasers can reach further and are brighter, they are no more or less accurate than red laser levels.

Which of the Two Should You Use?

What it really all comes down to is the application that you need the laser level for. If you need a high-quality laser level that can reach long distances and is very bright, especially one that can be seen in the daytime even outdoors, then it is a green laser level that you want.

However, if you are just working indoors and you don’t need the laser to reach all that far, not to mention not wanting to spend all that much money, then it is a red laser level that you want to go for.


As you can see, both red laser levels and green laser levels have their specific uses and applications. Which one you choose depends on the project at hand.
