When it comes to power tools, perhaps Makita is one of the most sought-after brands, due to their extensive line of corded and cordless options. With that in mind, most of Makita’s angle grinders not only have interchangeable batteries but also feature brushless motors that help with tool durability.

In this review, we will look at two of their outstanding models: the Makita XAG03Z 4-1/2-Inch Angle Grinder and the Makita XAG04Z 4-1/2-Inch / 5-Inch Angle Driver. Make sure to continue reading to find out more about each of these angle grinder’s specs, their similarities, and differences to help you decide which one to get.

A Quick Look at the Two Products

Both of these Makita angle grinders are lithium-ion powered and with a brushless motor to prolong the tool’s lifespan. They are also both part of the 18V LXT series so their batteries are interchangeable. Perhaps a notable difference is that the XAG04Z can take up to 5-inch discs.

Product 1

Makita XAG03Z 4-1/2-Inch Angle Grinder

An ergonomically designed cordless angle grinder. With a no-load speed of 8,500 RPM and a brushless motor, Makita once again delivers a powerful product. As well it uses Makita’s 18V LXT Lithium-Ion 4.0 Ah battery which can be used interchangably with other tools in this series.

Although the Makita XAG03Z is a discontinued model, you can still find it circulating among users and online shops. If you want to grab it for yourself, it has quite an ergonomic design at only 14-1/4 inches long and weighing only 5.5 pounds. Take note – this includes the battery!

This angle grinder also has a soft grip that’s rubberized to make it easier to hold for long hours. The motor is also protected thanks to the wire mesh intake. You can easily see the battery level using the 3-stage gauge, while the lock-on feature for the slide switch keeps you focused on the job (and not on the switch).

Its brushless motor helps match the torque and the RPM to the material you’re working on and the soft start feature will protect the gears. As for the speed, it sports 8,500 RPM and uses a Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion 4.0 Ah battery to power it. This means that the tool is suitable for most home repairs and light to medium-duty shop tasks.

Product 2

Makita XAG04Z 4-1/2-Inch / 5-Inch Angle Driver

A strong and durable cordless angle grinder from Makita. It’s 5-inch discs are ideal for grinding, cutting and sanding a wide range of materials including tile, concrete, pipe, conduit, and more. It also uses a 18V LXT Lithium-Ion 4.0 Ah battery that is interchangable between other Makita tools.

Also bearing a brushless motor that adjusts the RPM and torque together, the Makita XAG04Z has an added Active Feedback-sensing Technology, which stops the motor and the wheel together to avoid mechanical wear and tear. It also has a lock-on feature for the slide switch for convenience and you can still check your battery levels using the 3-stage gauge.

This model is only slightly heavier than the previous one, at 5.6 pounds, yet it still has a similar length of 14 1/4 inches. Like the XAG03Z, this one also has a rubberized grip that helps sweaty hands better hold the tool (and more safely). It also has a soft start to preserve the inner gears, which are spiral bevel in design for efficiency.

It has a 5/8-11 UNC spindle type and takes up to 5-inch diameter wheels, which means it is meant for heavy-duty work. The speed is the same as the XAG03Z, 8,500 RPM, and also runs using a Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery.

Makita XAG03Z vs. Makita XAG04Z: Similarities

As both from the same brand (and model series), the Makita XAG03Z and the XAG04Z have certain similarities, such as the following:

Battery Type

Both of them use a Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion 4.0 Ah battery to power them. If you have other Makita tools in your arsenal (that use this type of battery), you can use these batteries and interchange them with both of these angle grinders.

Separately, both of them have a 3-stage LED gauge, which means you don’t need to do the guesswork. Draining a battery too much is dangerous for both the battery and the tool motor itself. This is why knowing when to charge and when to keep using the tool is important to avoid problems in the long run.

Makita Batteries

No-Load Speed

These two Makita angle grinders have a no-load speed of 8,500 RPM. This speed is sufficient for tiling, pipework, concrete jobs, and general shop or garage work.

Convenience and Ergonomics

They both have a lock-on slide switch, which makes it more convenient for the operator. A lock-on switch prevents you from accidental triggers when using the tool in awkward angles.

Both these Makita angle grinders are at 14 1/4 inches in length. Having a compact size not only makes it easy to hold but also convenient to store.

To help improve the gears’ lifespan, they both have a soft start feature. It also helps reduce downtime when you’re trying to meet a deadline and get started on a job.

Brushless Motor

A brushless motor is used by both of these Makita angle grinders. This type of motor prolongs the lifespan of the tool and also lessens the vibration.

Makita XAG03Z vs. Makita XAG04Z: Differences

While they look similar and have a plethora of similarities, there are still notable differences between the two angle grinders:

Weight

The XAG03Z (at 5.5 pounds) is slightly lighter in weight than the XAG04Z (5.8 pounds) so it is easier to hold for long jobs.

Grinding Wheel Size

While the Makita XAG03Z only takes 4 1/2-inch grinding wheels, the XAG04Z can accommodate 5-inch sized discs.

Discontinued Product

Unfortunately, the Makita XAG03Z is a discontinued product so it is harder to find and to use the manufacturer’s warranty for it. On the other hand, the XAG04Z is readily available from Makita and different retailers.

Which of the Two Makita Angle Grinders Should You Get?

If you prefer a lighter weight, then the Makita XAG03Z is a better choice for you. Although it is discontinued, it will work well for many tasks such as restoration and metalwork.

However, if you want an angle grinder that can be used for both 4 1/2-inch and 5-inch wheels then the Makita XAG04Z is a better fit. This compatibility makes it ideal even for larger materials and tougher tasks.

Summary

Overall, both of these Makita angle grinders will work well for most shop jobs and even DIY work. They are convenient in terms of the cordless feature plus the rubberized grip for ergonomics. They aren’t too heavy compared to most 6-pound angle grinders that are cordless so you won’t feel strained using them.

Most of all, they both have a brushless motor, which reduces vibration and user fatigue.
