A Brief History of Worx and Black & Decker
First, we have Worx, a brand of tools and outdoor equipment that is very young. Worx is actually not its own company. Rather, it is owned by a Chinese company named Positec Tool Corporation. The Positec Tool Corporation is based out of Suzhou. It was first created in 1994 by Don Gao, a Chinese man with big dreams.
In the beginning, what is super interesting to note, is that the company sold its tools to other brands, which would then sell the tools under their own name. You guessed it, Black & Decker was one of these brands. However, Don Gao quickly saw the value of selling his tools under his own brand, which is why the Worx brand was created in 2004.
These products can be found in North America and Europe, mainly in retailers such as Lowe’s, Walmart, Home Depot, Canadian Tire, and Costco. Information on the Worx company’s size is a bit hard to find, although from what we can tell, it makes just a few of million dollars in yearly revenues, and has only a handful of employees.

On the other hand, we have Black & Decker, which was officially called The Black & Decker Manufacturing Company when it was first created by Duncan Black and Alonzo Decker in 1910. The company is currently headquartered in Maryland, just north of Baltimore. What is a bit confusing is that in 2010, Stanley Works merged with Black & Decker to become Stanley Black & Decker.
However, the tools themselves are still sold under the Black & Decker name, with the company we are talking about today being a wholly-owned subsidiary of Stanley Black & Decker. On a side note, it is interesting that this parent company also owns other brands including DeWalt and Craftsman. This brand is well known for producing a wide variety of products including power tools, accessories, hardware, home improvement products, and fastening systems.
Black & Decker is a true behemoth, as it has roughly 30,000 employees on the planet, with well over 12 billion dollars in yearly revenue.

Worx vs. Black & Decker: Which Offers Better Quality?
When it comes to Worx products, they are seen as being about average, or maybe a little bit above average. The general consensus is that Worx products are ideal for home use, for light work, small repair jobs, and other such things.
These tools are seen as being comfortable, functional, and durable enough for basic work. That said, it is not a tool brand that is highly recommended for heavy and continued professional use, especially not on a daily basis for fast-paced worksites. That said, Worx tools are also not all that expensive. They are more than affordable enough for most people looking to buy tools.
Now, remember that Worx is owned by the Positec Tool Corporation, and yes, they make all of their products in China. Although you might be worried about tool quality issues due to the location of manufacturing, most would agree that Worx tools are some of the better ones to come out of China.
Just like Worx, Black & Decker tools are also seen as being ideal for lighter work, repair jobs, DIY tasks, and other such things. People seem to be quite happy with Black & Decker products, particularly the power tools, and more specifically, the cordless power tools.
All in all, Black & Decker products are seen as being fine for basic work. However, just like with Worx, these are not tools that many people would choose for prolonged and heavy work. Although they may be used for such, the level of durability and longevity is somewhat limited, and therefore they are not the best for professionals to use.
That said, Black & Decker may have slightly higher quality products. What can be said is that Black & Decker tools are very reasonably priced, which is why so many people love them. The main reason why they are so well priced is that the products are made in China for the most part. However, a good sign is that this brand appears to be gearing up to move a lot of its production back to the USA.
Which Offers a Better Warranty?
Worx offers a three-year limited warranty on most of its products.
Finding warranty info for Black & Decker proves to be a difficult task, but from what we can tell, this brand offers a limited lifetime warranty on many products, and many power tools are covered by a two-year limited warranty.
It does appear as though Black & Decker has the better warranties on its products.
Worx vs. Black & Decker: Which Has a Better Product Portfolio?
What can be said here is that Black & Decker is a much larger company than Worx and it does make many more products.
For example, Worx makes a good deal of lawn and outdoor equipment, some power tools, and various accessories. Black & Decker makes all of these things, as well as small home appliances, cleaning solutions, healthcare products, and more.
Across mostly all product categories, whether drills, saws, or lawnmowers, Black & Decker does have the larger selection.
Which of the Two Brands Should You Choose?
When it comes down to it, in all honesty, if you need decent tools at good prices, and you need a massive selection to choose from, and with good warranties too, Black & Decker is the brand to go with.
That being said, Worx is a perfectly fine brand as well, particularly if you need outdoor equipment. Just keep in mind that because Black & Decker is so much larger as a company, it also has a far better product portfolio, along with the ability to sell its products at rock bottom prices.
The one thing that might be checking out in Worx’s portfolio is the Switchdriver.
Summary
If you need good tools at good prices, both Worx and Black & Decker are fine brands to go with, both being ideal for general use.
That said, personally, I prefer Black & Decker.
